The Making of our Knitwear collection, with Robert Mackie of Scotland

Established in 1845 by Robert Mackie, the brand has remained a cornerstone of Scottish knitwear for almost two centuries, with expertise passed down through generations of skilled makers. Since 2015, under the leadership of Graeme Haddow, Robert Mackie has continued to evolve - combining traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation and a firm commitment to sustainability.

Famous for their impeccable quality and bold use of colour, Robert Mackie of Scotland have passed their craftsmanship down through generations of skilled makers. We travelled north to Scotland to meet the people and discover the process behind our newest knitwear collection.

Every stage of production takes place entirely in-house at their Ayrshire mill, from initial design and machine knitting to wet finishing, brushing and assembly. This hands-on approach ensures complete control over quality and authenticity, maintaining the brand’s reputation for excellence.

You can easily introduce pattern to your home through small homeware accessories that you use every day. Adding a patterned mug to your morning routine, or a fun printed tea towel to add a bit of colour to your kitchen instantly adds interest without a complete overhaul.

Ceramics and textiles are a great way to experiment with pattern & colour. Stem, our simple graphic leaf has been very kind to us. Designed in 2000, it has become our brand icon, an enduring motif that has survived the test of time. Orla Kiely is a globally recognised fashion and lifestyle brand run by Orla, Dermott and a small team. Best known for our iconic Stem leaf print, which has grown and blossomed into an extensive library of nostalgic, joyful patterns. Each one with the unique ability to inspire you to be the most creative version of yourself.

Founded in 1995, Orla had a passion for bold colour and graphic design at a time when fashion was immersed in black. The Orla brand stood out from the very beginning. Combined with a special interest in mid-century design, Orla would trawl the markets in Portobello and Montreuil in Paris in search of vintage treasures, from objects to clothing from the sixties and seventies to feed her passion and establish a unique style.

An insight from Orla:

“The creative world I find myself in now started with a simple idea to design a collection of bags and accessories in a rainbow of prints, always joyful and happy with an emphasis on functionality.

With little funds but lots of enthusiasm, we started our company, his business with my creative, dedicated to colour and pattern. This was our first step along a winding path and the start of a journey filled with challenges and successes in equal measures.”

Orla’s dream was always to create a style with a strong sense of identity, a visual language that was welcoming and friendly – happy prints that make you smile! In Orla's designs, we often reference 1960s culture: fashion, film, interiors and graphic design. Nature is also a constant source of inspiration alongside other curious and conversational subject matters that spark new ideas every day.

“We should have called it Rowan Leaf. My husband’s surname is Rowan - I don’t know why we didn’t! It looks like it’s growing and people respond to that. And somehow, the balance, the density of the leaves, it just seems to work.” - Orla

From our very first collection of bags in 1995 we have always considered kindness to the environment.
Packaging
All our packaging, from the boxes to the sticky tape, are made entirely from paper or cardboard that can be kept, recycled, or re-used. You’ll also notice we do not include delivery notes to reduce the paper usage. We simply email the details to you.
Bags for Good
Each bag and accessory from our Bags for Good collection is made entirely from recycled polyester from pre-consumer plastic waste.

Woven Waste

In commitment to better improving our environmental impact, we have launched the Woven Waste collection.

Not only does the Woven Waste collection showcase our dedication to sustainability, but it also represents our commitment to creativity and innovation. By utilising leftover fabric from our factory, we are able to minimise waste and give new life to materials that would have otherwise been discarded.

With each bag in the collection being a unique mix of prints from previous seasons, these prints bring back memories of beloved designs that haven't been seen for a while.

Raffia

Handcrafted in Madagascar, our Raffia Bags and Accessories are created using traditional weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations. Every piece is carefully made by artisanal women working within a social enterprise that supports financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.

What makes our Raffia collection truly distinctive is the way it blends this rich tradition with our signature bold motifs and vibrant colour palettes. The natural texture of raffia provides the perfect canvas for playful patterns and iconic designs, resulting in pieces that feel both timeless and contemporary.

Where do you deliver to?

We deliver our Bags and Accessories to:

-> International: USA, Canada, Australia & New Zealand; France, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain & Italy

We will be shipping to the rest of Europe as soon as we can.

We can deliver our Homeware products to UK & The Channel Islands.

How much is delivery?

For UK orders, we are currently offering free delivery on all orders over £150. Orders under £150 will incur a £7 flat rate delivery charge.

What courier do you use?

For shipments to the UK we use DPD , the second largest international parcel delivery network in Europe, who are committed to being a carbon-neutral courier (a leader in their industry).

For shipments to Northern Ireland, we use DHL or DPD.

How do I return?

You will need your order confirmation number and the reason for your return.

Missing item in my order?

We may have sent your item in a separate parcel. You therefore may have two tracking references for the same order. If this is the case, have they all been delivered?

How do I look after my bag?

Orla Kiely uses a variety of different fabrics for our bags & accessories and we always seek to produce our product to the highest quality.

Due to the nature of our materials please take care when wearing dark clothing or denim as colour may transfer.

Care should be taken to avoid rubbing, contact with liquids, and prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Please do not wash your bag.

We advise using a warm damp cloth to dab and blot any affected areas.

What payment types do you offer?

Currently you can pay using your credit or debit card on our website. You can also use Applepay, Googlepay, Shop Pay, and PayPal.

We now accept Klarna in the UK. Please refer to the Klarna FAQs below.

We now have gift cards available at orlakiely.com!

All our gift cards expire 24 months after the date of issue and must be purchased in the intended currency of use. I.e. if you are purchasing for a friend in Ireland make sure to purchase the gift card in euros.

Product Warranty

All our bags and accessories carry a one year warranty (although we do expect them to last a lot longer!).

If your bag has a manufacturing fault which materialises within a year of purchase, we will be happy to send a replacement or offer a full refund on your order.
